Thanksgiving with My Roommates

Ah, the holidays. My favorite time of year. This year I’m grateful to have made it through my professional athletic career with only a few scars, and I’m grateful for my two new roommates. They are so kind that they invited me to join their families for Thanksgiving.

I got to meet everyone over the holiday weekend, there were 8 adults and 3 dogs staying under the same roof for a bustling four days. My roommates and their families are great, and there were two other dogs there: a Miniature Poodle, and an Australian Shepard. The Aussie and I got along great, but the Poodle was a senior and didn’t care for other dogs—too bad, I really wanted to be friends with her!

I really do love being around other dogs similar in age to me, especially if we can go running and playing somewhere, but I had to remember to bring my muzzle, because once I took off, those old instincts from my racing days kicked back in.

One thing my roommates didn’t tell me is that I’d be alone with the other dogs sometimes. The Aussie was able to roam free when everyone left, and that made me cry a lot in my crate. Sometimes you just gotta let it out when you're sad, you know? I tried to sneak out by digging through the blankets the first time this happened, but I couldn’t make it. Normally I don’t get so upset when I’m left alone, but being around my new friends without being able to play in the house was a real bummer.

Anyway, back to normal life now. Come out and meet me at 100 Oaks Petsmart this weekend!

Career Changer

Sorry I’ve been offline for a month, but I needed to take some “me-time” to re-center. I’ve been listening to a lot of Duran Duran (I feel like they wrote Rio just for me), and I even moved across town and found two new roommates. They seem fine, but I’m still looking around for something permanent.

As part of my re-centering "me time," I turned the mirror inward. I realized that going from the glitz and glamor of being a professional athlete to being retired left me feeling a little bit empty. Fortunately I got my degree in accounting before I was called up to the majors, because I just landed a great new job as Senior Manager, Bones Receivable.

I’ve had to adjust going into the (dog friendly) office every day. So far I love all of my coworkers, regardless of if they have 2 or 4 legs. A lot of my dog-peers are on the smaller side, but we get along great. In fact, I usually forget they are around—I’m just that into this new job!

It feels great to get back online. I plan on keeping up with my writing to help me reflect on my journey. Follow this blog to stay up to date on my foray into life outside of the spotlight. My hope is that my experiences can help you learn something about yourself!

Playful girl

So far we've noticed that Rio is a very playful pup. She is a toy explorer, she stuffs her head into the box of toys pulls a new treasure out chomps and tosses then repeats the process until every toy is placed just so to maximize a room's feng shui!

While she does listen to commands slowly and with repetition I think it's largely due to the new environment. As she becomes more familiar and settled I believe she'll be more responsive to commands and calls.

I haven't had the chance to walk her alone yet but she does well on lead. She is pretty interested in other animals around her. At the dog park she is very independent and a wanderer.

Whoever brings this sweet girl into their home will have an affectionate but independent dog that is fluffy and soft as can be!

Sleepover!

Hey everyone! Rio here at a friends house for a sleepover. Hopefully it's a short one so I can go home (with you)! Already everyone says I'm sweet and soft as the bunnies I chase (if only you'd let me). I've got my special blanket and my two favorite toys to play with.
